Systems approach

Innovation becomes a real capability only when it stops being occasional.

by Ilario Tornese · Certified Innovation Manager (UNI 11814)

The principle

Innovation is neither a department nor an event. It is the result of strategy, culture, processes and resources pulling in the same direction: if one of them goes its own way, it holds back all the others.

The most common mistake

Innovation is handed to a dedicated team, a lab or a single technical department, and the rest of the company is expected to follow. But what is born in isolation tends to stay isolated.

How to recognize it

Pilot projects that work and don’t scale. Successes that depend on one brilliant person and vanish when that person changes role. Recurring bottlenecks between functions, and lessons learned that stay locked inside a single project.

Where to start

Take the last innovation project and work out who had to say yes for it to move forward: procurement, IT, legal, operations. That is where you see where the system holds and where it jams.

Innovation becomes a real capability only when it stops being occasional.
