#06Innovation culture
Culture decides what you are allowed to do when you innovate.
by Ilario Tornese · Certified Innovation Manager (UNI 11814)
The principle
Culture is everything a company rewards, tolerates and punishes. A culture of innovation lets the freedom to explore live alongside the rigor of those who have to deliver.
The most common mistake
Tools are bought, procedures introduced, someone is put in charge, and it is taken for granted that people will change how they behave. But if the system keeps rewarding only those who never make mistakes, nobody will take a risk.
How to recognize it
New tools only half adopted. Mistakes hidden instead of discussed. Functions that share information only when they are forced to. Routine becomes the safest place to be.
Where to start
Look at the last initiative that failed: who paid the price, and what did the company learn? The answer says more than any statement of values.
Culture decides what you are “allowed” to do when you innovate.
