#09Open innovation
The ecosystem speeds up what the organization, on its own, tends to slow down.
by Ilario Tornese · Certified Innovation Manager (UNI 11814)
The principle
Not all the ideas and skills you need are inside the company. Open innovation deliberately manages the knowledge that flows in and out: universities, startups, suppliers, clients. The company stops being a fortress that must produce every idea within its own walls and becomes a network in constant exchange with the outside.
The most common mistake
Collaboration is seen as a threat to intellectual property, or reduced to buying services. But buying consulting is not co-creating: the two-way exchange is missing.
How to recognize it
Teams building from scratch what already exists outside. Long times to market. Internal skills and patents left in a drawer instead of creating value outside too.
Where to start
Map the partners the company works with today and ask, for each one, what we have learned from them in the last year. If the answer is “nothing”, it is just supply.
The ecosystem speeds up what the organization, on its own, tends to slow down.
