Integrity and social responsibility

Integrity isn’t an afterthought: it is responsible design from the start.

by Ilario Tornese · Certified Innovation Manager (UNI 11814)

The principle

An innovation is never neutral. Every new or changed entity has effects on people, the environment and society, and integrity asks you to consider them from the design stage, not afterwards.

The most common mistake

Innovation is judged only on profitability and competitive advantage, and social responsibility is left to marketing or communications. Ethics becomes a cost to contain instead of a design criterion.

How to recognize it

Effective but fragile solutions with unforeseen effects: environmental impacts, privacy problems, reputational crises. More wary partners and investors. Talented people choosing to work elsewhere.

Where to start

Add a fixed question to project reviews: who could be harmed by this solution, and what can we change now so that it doesn’t happen? Integrity works like a purifier built into the plant, not added downstream.

Integrity isn’t an afterthought: it is responsible design from the start.
