Performance assessment

Measuring well isn’t control: it is steering learning and direction.

by Ilario Tornese · Certified Innovation Manager (UNI 11814)

The principle

Measuring tells you whether initiatives are creating value and lets you correct course while under way. In innovation this matters even more, because the path is never linear.

The most common mistake

Innovation is judged with the same indicators as stable processes, looking only at the final result. But in the early stages progress is measured in tested assumptions and reduced uncertainty, not in revenue.

How to recognize it

Projects with no prospects kept alive by inertia, and promising ones closed too early. Lessons nobody collects. Decisions based on impressions instead of data.

Where to start

Alongside the result indicators, give every initiative two or three learning indicators. Without measures you sail like a ship without radar: all you can do is hope to avoid the obstacles.

Measuring well isn’t control: it is steering learning and direction.

Got a process that eats up your time?

The DISBIT method applies these principles to your company’s processes: start from one, measure it and make it simple.
